June Scholar of the Month - Liza
Liza
Liza, 11, from Music Education Islington, has made exceptional progress since picking up the saxophone at the start of last year. Her tutor tells us her commitment to and progression in her abilities on the saxophone have been extremely impressive. She has been picking up her music pieces with ease and is self-motivated - often taking the initiative in group lessons to practice the next sections without prompt from her tutor.
Liza has also particularly stood out at London Music Fund’s recent Music Technology Playing Days, where Scholars took part in 3 days of jam-packed music making, recording, and tech tutorials at University of Westminster’s Arts campus. Liza engaged brilliantly in the workshops - she was able to create her own melodies for the song her group was working on with confidence, and had a positive attitude for the entire session.
We asked Liza how she has been finding her Scholarship:
What has been your favourite moment of your Scholarship so far?
‘One of my favourite moments was the Music Technology Workshop Day — I loved creating melodies with my group and hearing how all our ideas came together in a real song. It was also amazing to meet other young musicians and feel part of a team.’
What are you looking forward to most this coming year?
‘I’m really looking forward to performing more and preparing for my Grade 4 saxophone exam. I’d also love to start composing some of my own music and maybe learn a bit of piano too. I’m excited to keep growing as a musician.’
What are your musical goals for the future?
‘I want to keep moving up through the saxophone grades and hopefully reach Grade 8 one day. I also want to write my own songs, try out different instruments, and maybe even start a band with friends. I really enjoy performing and expressing myself through music.’
What is your current favourite song and why?
‘Right now my favourite song is “Houdini” by Dua Lipa. I love how it sounds — it’s a bit mysterious but still really fun and upbeat. It always makes me want to dance, and I think the saxophone would sound amazing in a remix of it!’
