‘How Music Found Its Way Into Our Lives’ - Iris’s Scholarship
We were delighted to receive the below account from Tracey, parent to Iris, who we have supported on our Scholarship programme since 2016.

‘Music education was not really part of my life at school but as a child I had piano lessons and my husband was in a band in his twenties, so music was something we appreciated. That all went up a gear the day our daughter Iris came home from school with a form from Southwark Music Service. Amongst the list of instruments to learn on a Saturday, she chose the flute and just like that a new chapter opened up for her.
‘From the very beginning, the teachers were incredible. Supportive, talented, patient and genuinely excited by every small milestone Iris reached.’
They nurtured not just her ability to play music, but her belief in herself. When they encouraged her to apply for the London Music Fund (LMF), originally the Mayor’s Music Fund, it was new territory for us as parents and a whole new world of what music had to offer.

‘Through LMF, Iris has had unforgettable opportunities. From performing in orchestras, AI audition simulations to stepping into a real radio studio, she’s been immersed in experiences that have sparked her creativity and deepened her love for music.’
Plus, the fund has helped with costs of repairs, instrument services and books. Also being selected as a Senior Scholar has allowed her to understand the importance of mentoring younger musicians, exploring new styles and genres, and taking part in experimental performances that have pushed her boundaries in the best way possible. The confidence and support she’s gained through music gave her the courage to become part of other musical groups – Kinetika Bloco, Grand Union Orchestra and Chineke! Junior. It’s also what inspired her to start a jazz club at school.

‘As a parent, watching this journey has been nothing short of joyful.’
I may not play an instrument myself, but I now understand how profoundly powerful music education and opportunities such as LMF can be. It’s not just about notes and rhythms, but building confidence, connections and creativity.
So, thank you to the fabulous team behind the London Music Fund and every musician who has guided Iris along the way. Thank you for showing us that music for many children can be a beautiful educational choice.
Iris plans to study classical flute after Year 13 and hopefully live in France one day.’
