December Scholar of the Month - Deepshika

Deepshika

Deepshika, age 12, from Sutton Music Trust, has shown remarkable progress since becoming a London Music Fund Scholar for flute in 2023. Her instrument tutor describes her commitment and development as truly outstanding, noting the impressive progress she has made in both skill and confidence.

This year, Deepshika has taken on a leadership role, guiding the flute section of the Sutton Training Band for much of the academic year. Her dedication to practice and her willingness to take responsibility highlight not only her musical ability but also her maturity.

Beyond her musical achievements, Deepshika is celebrated for her kindness, politeness, and the positive example she sets for her peers. Her tutor commends her reliability, commenting that she is consistently among the first to arrive at rehearsals and is always ready to help with setting up, embodying the spirit of teamwork and generosity.

Deepshika’s qualities shone particularly brightly at the London Music Fund’s recent Autumn Playing Day, where Scholars participated in workshops led by Musiko Musika. Staff were impressed not only by her enthusiastic engagement with the sessions but also by her respectful and considerate manner throughout the event.

We asked Deepshika how she has been finding her Scholarship:

What are you looking forward to most this term?

‘I am looking forward to learning new musical skills, learning more about music and culture, while having fun and making new friends.’

How did you find the experience of singing and playing at our Awards Day? What was your favourite moment and why?

‘I enjoyed it very much, and I liked challenging myself with new music! It was overall a good experience. In my opinion, the best moment was playing together, you get that sense of unity and feel pride that all your practice paid off! And you get the satisfaction of hearing how far you've come from the beginning of your journey. Playing with others is something I enjoy very much.’

What are your musical goals for the future?

‘My musical goal is to finish my grade 5 flute exam before year 9 (when studying for GCSEs starts). I want to learn improvisation and seek new opportunities for learning and performing - while also enjoying every second!’

We’re so happy Deepshika has been making the most of her Scholarship and enjoying learning the flute. Go Deepshika!
