Music Technology Workshop Days!
Last month, LMF took our Scholars up to Harrow - to the University of Westminster’s Arts campus, for 3 days of jam-packed music making, recording, and tech tutorials in their state-of-the-art facilities. The sessions were led by UOW music production students, and were created to give LMF Scholars the chance to learn more about music production, particularly using Logic Pro.
Logic Pro is a professional digital audio workstation (DAW) developed by Apple for macOS. It's widely used by musicians, producers, and sound engineers to record, edit, and mix music. Known for its powerful features and user-friendly interface, Logic Pro offers a wide range of virtual instruments, audio effects, and recording capabilities. Many musicians today are able to produce, mix and master their music from their own homes via DAWs, and learning to use them is a key skill any aspiring musician should be encouraged to develop.
Each technology day involved Scholars from different cohorts, starting with our Senior Scholars, then our youngest Scholars, and finally our oldest Scholars. In each session, The UoW students gave tutorials in mic’ing specific instruments, looping samples, layering instrumentation and effects, using Logic’s plug-ins and drum loops, and also gave Scholars lots of creative freedom to experiment making their own tracks from scratch. At the end of the day, we listened back to the tracks each group had made together and gave our feedback. Here’s an example of what we made:
After the sessions, we asked our Scholars about their experiences of the Music Technology Playing Day. Here’s what they told us:
82% of Scholars told us they mostly enjoyed making music with other scholars, learning how to record and learning a new skill at the Music Technology Playing Days.
94% of Scholars are now more interested in using Logic and producing their own music, with 82% now considering studying music production further.
88% of Scholars would attend another Music Technology Playing Day.
We’re so glad our Scholars enjoyed this new style of Playing Day and found the sessions fun and informative! We’d like to say an enormous thank you to the University of Westminster for hosting us and teaching our Scholars such valuable skills. Hopefully we will be back again soon!
