December Scholar of the Month

12-year-old Serenity began her trombone Scholarship in 2021 and has been described by her instrumental tutor as ‘unbelievably enthusiastic’ about her trombone lessons – she often arrives to her lessons with a musical passage prepared before her teacher has even asked for it! Alongside the trombone, Serenity also plays the cello, steel pan, drum kit, and keyboard.

Serenity has embraced every performance opportunity with enthusiasm and commitment this year. Serenity made her debut at the Royal Albert Hall as part of the Tri-Borough Music Service’s Partnership Project, ‘Music Makes Me’, where she played the cello. Additionally, Serenity attended LMF’s most recent Playing Day at Conway Hall, and we were particularly impressed by her ability to support and encourage other Scholars.

We asked Serenity about how she’s finding her Scholarship so far:

How did you find the most recent Playing Day at Conway Hall?

The music play day at Conway Hall was very special, we got to meet the Oompah Brass Band on Remembrance Sunday. One of the musicians was supposed to be playing at the Cenotaph, but he kindly came to us instead. He played the trumpet before and after the 2-minute silence. The band members were very nice and helpful teachers that incorporated everyone's ideas and created an amazing symphony so that we could play a concert for our parents. I had a good time and made news friends. It was a big surprise to see my face on the LMF poster.

What has been your favourite moment of your Scholarship so far?

My favourite moments of my Scholarship so far have been the Graduation and Awards Ceremony at RCM, playing at the Queen Elizabeth Hall on the Southbank for the LMF 10th anniversary gala concert, playing at The Royal Albert Hall for Music Makes Me, doing the photoshoot for ABRSM’s new website and seeing myself on posters, and getting the opportunity to do cool music workshops at place like Ronnie Scott’s and Guildhall.

What are you looking forward to most this year?

I’m looking forward to my Trombone grading and the next Playing Day.

What are your musical goals for the future?

My musical goal for the future is to become a famous musician, composer or a conductor.
