“It is a great honour to become an Ambassador for the London Music Fund. I believe every young person deserves the chance to develop their creative voice, and I am passionate about making music more inclusive and representative of the world we live in. I hope to contribute in a way that expands how we listen, collaborate, and shape the future of music together” - Midori Komachi
Komachi is an internationally acclaimed violinist and composer, bridging traditional and contemporary music of UK and Japan. Expressing the distinct timbres of Western and Japanese traditions, she brings together performance, composition and installation for immersive experiences. Her recent works include installations for the Japan Pavilion at London Design Biennale 2025, Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts and music for major brands such as LUSH and OPPO.
In 2025, she served as Music and Audio Content Editor with Immersive International for the UK Pavilion at the Osaka World Expo. Upcoming engagements include a live performance project Chashitsu: Auditory Tea Room, premiering at the Royal Albert Hall in October 2025.
As a solo violinist, Komachi has performed extensively throughout Europe and Japan, at major venues including Tonhalle Zurich, Warsaw Philharmonic, and Wigmore Hall. She was previously a Musician in Residence at the British Council & PRS Foundation, where she worked with Youth Orchestras and Bands in Diamantina, Brazil. Also a bilingual writer, she has published two books in Japan and has frequently appeared on media such as BBC Radio 3, NHK, TV Tokyo and British Airways in-flight entertainment. She is currently an Adjunct Lecturer at Queen’s University (Canada) and a PhD candidate at Goldsmiths, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council.
Komachi recently invited LMF’s Senior Scholars to participate in a project for the London Design Biennale 2025, in collaboration with Clare Farrow Studio. Called “Paper Clouds: Materiality in Empty Space”, the project was a collaboration between Tokyo and London, between design and music, and inspired by Japanese washi paper. Komachi led a workshop which focused on the Japanese concept of Sawari, exploring how to add instrumental sound layers to a composition, following which four Senior Scholars took part in a live performance alongside Komachi in situ at the Nelson Stair in Somerset House.
“It was a great pleasure to work with the Senior Scholars supported by the London Music Fund during the performances at Somerset House, as part of the Paper Clouds installation for the Japan Pavilion at the London Design Biennale 2025. Through a workshop exploring Japanese sonic concepts, these talented young musicians created their own motifs, performed live with the installation. It was inspiring to see how each young musician offered such a unique voice—every performance became a new version of my composition and the space, enriching the installation with fresh meaning” - Midori Komachi
